Alan Lorenz

The death has been announced of Alan Lorenz, who has been the principal benefactor of the Cricketer Cup for many years. His involvement in the competition stemmed from his friendship at Charterhouse with former Secretary and President Joe Ullman. Joe was at the same prep school as Alan and two years older, so was asked to look after him when Alan arrived at Charterhouse. They later met in 2004 at a prep school old boys’ dinner, when Alan recalled how kind Joe had been to him at Charterhouse and asked how he could repay him. Joe was by now Secretary of the Cricketer Cup and suggested he might like to sponsor the competition. Alan was in fact a better footballer than cricketer at school, playing two years in the 1st XI on the wing, but gladly agreed to help. Although he qualified as a solicitor, he had become a distributor for Herbalife, the global dietary supplements company. He gave the Cricketer Cup £5000 in 2005 and has continued to give as generously ever since, including a substantial donation to the 2017 dinner. His only regret was that Charterhouse Friars never reached the final in his years of sponsorship. Alan always attended the final when he could, his infectious enthusiasm reaching out to all those he met, and he will be much missed. Below is a photo of him speaking at the cup presentation for the 2015 final.
