2018 Cricketer Cup - Round 1

Old Cheltonians could only make 188 against Sherborne Pilgrims, James Francis taking 5-55. In reply Sherborne were 40-3 but lost no further wickets, Henry Cheal ending with a fine 111 not out. Sherborne now play Old Cranleighans who had a huge win against Haileybury Hermits. Cranleigh made 311 and Haileybury 76 off 26 overs, Nathan Thorpe taking 5-10.

Eton Ramblers made 320-7 at Brighton, J Rogers top-scoring with a fine 111. In reply Old Brightonians were 122-5 after 34 overs when the rains came, Eton going through on net run rate. They now play Old Tonbridgians who had a comfortable win at home against Repton Pilgrims. Repton batted first to make 223-8, Callum Broderick, who has played for Derbyshire this year, making 76 and Tom Pointon 47, Marcus O’Riordan taking 3-44. Tonbridge were always up with the rate and won with four overs to spare, Tom Elliott making 79 not out. Luke Lacey took 3-47 but Repton conceded 47 extras, mostly wides.

Old Hurstjohnians had a tight game with Rugby Meteors. Hurst collapsed to 52-6 after 16 overs, but Mike Harrison made 72 and, with help from the tail, they batted out all their overs for 191-8. Rugby were 160-8 in reply, but just made it home thanks to 66 not out from P. Clarke in an excellent game of cricket. Rugby now play the holders of the cup, Old Wellingtonians, who had an easy win at home to Old Amplefordians. Ampleforth could only make 127, Leo Methley taking 4-23 and Wellington won by seven wickets, Adam Dewes 77 not out.

Charterhouse Friars chose to bat on a wicket always helpful to bowlers and could only muster 113 in 38 overs. Wickets were shared between Wright (3-12 off 10), Wallis (3-42) and Low (2-44). Radley’s reply started briskly as runs and wickets followed close together. A good partnership between Wilf Marriott and Ollie Martyn-Hemphill saw Radley to a good position at 60 for 3. Martyn-Hemphill (30) and Duffell (25 no) then saw Radley almost all the way home winning by 5 wickets in the 27th over. Radley now play Old Bedfordians who had a good game with Marlborough Blues. Bedford made 269-6, Will Aitkenhead making 91 and Christian Davis 63. Marlborough finished 37 short, Uzi Qureshi making 63 and four wickets each for Tim Chapman and George Wood.

Old Malvernians had a big win against Old Alleynians, amassing 392-6. Alex Milton made 139 and Fred Wynn 66. Alleynians could only muster 170 in reply, Joe O’Gorman taking 3-33. Malvern now play Harrow Wanderers who also had a big win at Old Merchant Taylors. OMTs made 214-8 and Harrow won by nine wickets.

Bradfield Waifs made 273-7 at Winchester, Harry Came scoring a fine 136. In reply Old Wykehamists could only make 128, Charlie Russell taking 4-34 and Charlie Gwynn 3-42. Bradfield now entertain Oundle Rovers who won a tight game at Eastbourne against last year’s finalists. Oundle made 219-5 thanks to 85 from Greg Smith and 46 from Tom Bishop. Old Eastbournians came within 29 runs before being all out 190, Angus Stewart top-scoring with 65 and Will Street taking 5-30.

Uppingham Rovers had a comfortable win over Old Cholmelians. Uppingham made 251-6 off their 50 overs and Highgate replied with 154 all out off 39 overs. Uppingham now play Shrewsbury Saracens for whom Ben Williams had a fine all-round match against Old Cliftonians. Clifton made 233-6, L. Durrans 96 and J. Barnes 80 not out. Williams took 4-35 and then made 99 in Shrewsbury’s 236-4 off 38 overs, J. Brydon supporting him well with 46.

Downside Wanderers won the toss and elected to bat, but lost wickets at regular intervals and could only make 122. Freddie Simon (3-16) and Francois Vainker (3-29) were the pick of the Martyrs bowlers. In reply, brothers Alex (40) and Ollie Smith (51*) put on an opening stand of 65 to ensure the Martyrs went safely through to the next round. St. Edwards now play Felsted Robins, who made a steady 238-8 at Stowe with contributions from Huntingdon 61, Burrett 51 and King 46 not out. In reply Stowe Templars could only make 148, King capping a fine all-round performance with 4-20.
